Auckland is often quoted as the economic powerhouse of New Zealand, due to its size, influence and business performance. However, it remains a region of untapped potential, where significant opportunities exist to leverage its unique business, tourism, and events landscape to further increase economic growth for the betterment of Auckland and New Zealand.
Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) Ltd is a council-controlled organisation, established in November 2010. In recognition of the role Auckland plays in the New Zealand economy the ATEED Board set a vision for ATEED to “improve New Zealand’s economic prosperity by leading the successful transformation of Auckland’s economy”.
In our first year, we have made considerable progress towards creating the sort of organisation we need to respond to this vision. And we have already delivered some key projects, such as the Major Events Strategy and Visitor Plan that have quickly redefined Auckland’s approach to this important economic and tourism opportunity.
ATEED’s structured in four business units – destination, business and sector development, planning and performance, marketing and communications.
Three organisations which where wholly owned council-controlled organisations of legacy councils were required by the Local Government (Tamaki Makaurau Reorganisation) Act 2009 and associated Orders in Council to cease operating and form part of ATEED. The three organisations were Enterprise North Shore Trust, Manukau Enterprise and Employment Trust (trading as Enterprising Manukau) and Waitakere Enterprise Trust Board. In addition to these organisations, ATEED acquired the Auckland Tourism and Visitors Trust (trading as Tourism Auckland), the Rodney Economic Development Trust and a substantial proportion of Enterprise Franklin Development Trust.
In ATEED’s first year we completed our first Business Plan committed to an ambitious work programme based around three major strategies that will guide much of our future activities; the Visitor Plan, the Innovation Plan and the Foreign Direct Investment strategy.
